Credit Programs
Associate DegreesThe Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree programs conform to statewide standards developed by the Department of Technical and Adult Education. These programs are terminal degrees designed to prepare students for employment. The Associate of Applied Science degree programs are comprised of general core courses and occupational courses, with a minimum of 90 quarter credit hours required for graduation. Please see program information pages for details and requirements.
DiplomasDiploma programs conform to statewide standards developed by the Department of Technical and Adult Education. Diploma programs are comprised of general core courses and occupational courses, with a minimum of 60 quarter credit hours required for graduation. Please see program information pages for details and requirements.
Technical Certificates of CreditTechnical Certificate of Credit (TCC) programs are designed to provide courses of study for specific job-related skills. Certificate programs normally require no more than one year of study and may be offered on an as-needed basis. A student must meet all admission requirements to transfer into a diploma or an AAT degree program. Courses must be at the 100 level or above to be considered for inclusion in a diploma or AAT degree program of study. Generally, the same academic standards that apply to diploma and degree programs apply to technical certificate programs. Please see program information pages for details and requirements.
General Education PhilosophyAppalachian Technical College, in cooperation and collaboration with area businesses, industries, community, and education partners, believes that general education outcomes provide individual success and workforce development. The College has identified and measured the following general education outcomes:
- AAS graduates will perform mathematical calculations at the collegiate level.
- AAS graduates will successfully apply the writing process for exposition, analysis, and/or argumentation.
- AAS graduates will demonstrate knowledge of concepts of economic principles, forces and indicators.
- All AAS and diploma graduates will demonstrate computer competency mastery.
- Diploma graduates will produce logically organized, grammatically acceptable written communication.
- Diploma graduates will apply basic arithmetic operations in solving occupational and/or technical problems.
The achievement of these outcomes occurs over several courses in the student’s program of study, including academic core as well as occupational courses, and indicates the graduate’s attainment of postsecondary academic knowledge and skills necessary to become successful in his or her career choice and lifelong learning.
Learning SupportStudents whose test scores or transcripts indicate a lack of academic preparation for a program of study are enrolled in Learning Support. Learning Support classes carry institutional credit but do not apply toward graduation or a student's grade point average. These courses are numbered 096-099 (e.g., ENG 097, MAT 098). Emphasis is placed on improvement of writing skills, understanding and performance in reading, numerical skills, and elementary algebra. The following restrictions are placed on Learning Support students:
- Students required to take learning support classes must take those classes each quarter.
- Students withdrawing from learning support courses must also withdraw from any credit courses. This could occur if students were provisionally admitted.
- Students successfully completing learning support classes that lead to an Associate of Applied Technology course of study must pass an exit test with a qualifying score before entering credit classes that require regular acceptance.

At Appalachain Technical College, we strive to give each of our students an employment-driven educational experience.
